Reviews

Andrew Duke - From The Deep End
Duke's music is generally meditative, to be absorbed and digested, deciphered and interpreted as you wish. There is undoubtedly a personal message, mood or feeling for Duke himself, but the music feels so intensely personal and carefully assembled that it deserves the listener's full concentration and attention.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_andrewduke_ftde.htm

Kenji Siratori - Melancholic Lobotomy
Although Kenji seems to specialize in spoken word, he is more than competent enough to step up to the music plate as well as shown by this short release, which has a good enough balance of dark atmospherics and noise to keep one interested.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_kenjisiratori_ml.htm

Cría Cuervos - Vor Feuerschlünden
Recorded entirely without synthesizers, this experimental electro-acoustic album consists of field recordings, self-programmed theta waves, shortwaves and software-generated sounds. If drone and electronic experimentation are your favoured genres, "Vor Feuerschlünden" is worth a closer look.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_criacuervos_vf.htm

I, Synthesist - Art Of Survival
It would seem that Chris Ianuzzi sought to supplement his signature dry and minimalist sound with explicit club-friendly beats, an approach whose efficacy can be questioned, even more so in the context of a full-length album.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_isynthesist_aos.htm

Missouri - Run With the People and Hunt With the Hare
Even if the themes expressed on "Run With the People and Hunt With the Hare" aren't exactly musically progressive or culturally critical, they at least provide enough classic groove in a straightforward, egalitarian manner to keep the party rolling.

Reviews

Manufactura - In the Company of Wolves
It would seem that Chris Ianuzzi sought to supplement his signature dry and minimalist sound with explicit club-friendly beats, an approach whose efficacy can be questioned, even more so in the context of a full-length album.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_manufactura_itcow.htm

Andrew Chalk - Time Of Hayfield
The biggest departure from Chalk's previous solo material on "Time of Hayfield" is the fact that instead of the album just consisting of a few long songs, we have individually titled tracks, the longest being in the 14-minute range and the shortest not breaking the five-minute mark.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_andrewchalk_toh.htm

Bitter:Sweet - The Remix Game
Those of us that believed the trip-hop genre had nearly ceased to exist will find this release a bittersweet reminder of that all but bygone era. This is not to say the artists are simply recycling the sounds of the early 1990s.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_bittersweet_trg.htm

Indu Mezu - Chdetoria
Whether you term Indu Mezu industrial, experimental, glitch or ambient, you'll be somewhat off the mark: on "Chdetoria," labels are transcended and what is left is something more akin to an autobiographical soundtrack, constantly changing and evolving, as does the listener.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_indumezu_c.htm

Objekt4 - Shades Of Night
Skilfully composed using essentially processed field recordings and the odd instrumental element (a guitar chord here, a bell there), "Shades Of Night" comes across as the dark side of a meditation tape or, perhaps, even as an aural opiate.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_objekt4_son.htm

Dimension Zero - Scythe
While the CD would most likely appeal to a fan of electronic rock, it's time to call a spade a spade and admit that if you're looking for your standard EBM fare, "Scythe" probably isn't going to suit your tastes.

Individual Totem - Mothfly
"Mothfly" is a strong comeback for this talented German band and should be well received by industrial music lovers who decide to give it a chance.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_individualtotem_m.htm

Joe Colley - Hive
A concept piece built around field recordings of bees in and outside their hive. While the 'beehive' concept could have been elaborated and expanded upon much further, "Hive" is still a solid release that will appeal to fans of drone and experimental ambient.

Reviews

Moljebka Pvlse/Seventeen Migs Of Spring - Ravha/Electricity Gardens
Throughout our everyday existence there is a constant aural stream flowing in from our environment. While most people can easily discard these bits of disassociated memory, the artists behind Moljebka Pvlse and Seventeen Migs of Spring utilize these relics to form a lucid dream of disconnected familiarity.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_re.htm

Cyanhide - Dancefloor
Anachronism aside, the album is well worth listening to, with a wide appeal that spans aging goths as well as fans of layered dark electro like early Velvet Acid Christ or In Strict Confidence.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_cyanhide_d.htm

Vas0k - Vas0k
Vasøk claims influences from electronica and hip-hop to Russian protest songs and Norwegian black metal but don't think too hard about any but the first on that list. Ultimately, the impression of "Vasøk" becomes one of too much time spent on self-indulgence and not enough on coherent content.

Reviews

Stpocold - What Happened Outside
Whether you're expecting pure sublime noise, harsh ambient or even a tribute to electronic legends, there's something here for everyone with a taste for a roughly distorted mirror to society. It's loud, misanthropic and likely to offend somebody.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_stpocold_who.htm

Mirko Uhlig / Dronæment - Farewell Fields
An hour's worth of minimal drone-influenced ambience, showcasing the talent of two emerging names of a new generation of sound artists.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_ff.htm

Aa1 - Live At Electroline
"Live at Electroline" is a weird and wonderful journey that is certainly worth taking for those who appreciate sound composition outside the realm of typical auditory comprehension.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_aa1_lae.htm

Thermostatic - Joy-Toy (2007)
It can be just what the doctor ordered to lift jaded folks out of seasonal depression, with playfully addictive repertoire of Nintendo love songs. Or it could simply annoy the Jesus Christ out of you. In either case, you won't be quick to forget it.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_thermostatic_jt2007.htm

The Chaos Industry - Karoshi
All in all, a clumsily constructed recording, deficient in power, emotion or excitement. Kudos to The Chaos Industry for attempting to bring the live music element into a predominantly virtual genre, but I feel far more growth is still needed.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_chaosindustry_k.htm

Dino Felipe - Dino Felipe Is Sleeping
Is there a method to all this madness? Only Dino knows, so don't bother attempting to decipher this outlandish hodgepodge of misfit electronic doodling. It's not supposed to make sense; just sit back and take it all in - you'll sleep better that way.

Reviews

Dekad - Confidential Tears
A strong album with a stylistically varied range of tracks, consistent songwriting and smooth vocal delivery.  Everything comes together nicely with Dekad presenting their own brand of modern electro-industrial music that mixes classic elements with their own ideas to keep things original and interesting.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_dekad_ct.htm

Sam & Valley - Stupid Love or Smart Laugh
As a compilation of unreleased material, this limited edition proves to be a very good introduction to the varied musical world of Sam & Valley and will certainly appeal to old fans as well. Though disconcerting at first, it is an engaging recording to be approached with tongue firmly in cheek.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_samnvalley_slosl.htm

Celluloide - Naphtaline LP
On the face of it, the "Naphtaline LP" is a collection of fairly simplistic electro-pop cover tunes but look beyond the initial pop sensibilities and you'll find some excellent reinterpretations of tracks from some heavyweights on the dark music scene. Cover albums often don't work too well but Celluloide do something interesting to pay tribute to the bands that have influenced them.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_celluloide_nlp.htm

Hyperbubble - Airbrushed Alibis
Hyperbubble's sonic approach is what really brings back the fun in electronic music. "Airbrushed Alibis" is one of those albums that can pretty much make your day if you give it a chance. You can take it seriously or pretty much just drop your music defenses down for a while and just enjoy it for what it is.

Reviews

Punch Inc. - Fight Club
The only real requirement when listening to Punch Inc. is a simple one: volume, and lots of it. Crank those speakers as far as they can go and, if possible, do so within an enclosed space. The resulting reverberations and noise cross-contamination interferences that build up are spectacular: truly the only way to fully appreciate this recording.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_punchinc_fc.htm

Yuki Tendo - Saturnine
Crystal clear, yet terrifyingly complex beats coupled with mechanised atmospherics. Haunting sound effects echoing over repetitive melodies. Exciting, sensitively structured sequencing that builds beautifully before floating back down to the grim inter-track silence.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_yukitendo_s.htm

Emmon - The Art & The Evil
If you like your electro poppy, upbeat and catchy, Emmon is the thing for you.  Not really retro but more an updating and reinterpretation of the classic electro and synthpop sound.  All the hooks and coolness are intact but redefined for a new generation.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_emmon_taate.htm

Interviews

Eric Oehler - Null Device
Started well over a decade ago by Oehler and college friend/main lyricist Eric Goedken, Null Device has gone from a slightly askew synthpop/EBM hybrid and evolved to a completely askew creative endeavor that combines so many styles of music and lyrical invention whose musis is, to say the least, exhilarating.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/interviews/m_nulldevice.htm

Mirko Hentrich and Carsten Stiller - Audiophob
"Serving you with best industrial-ambient music since 2004." is the motto of this small experimental music label founded by Mirko Hentrich (of Spherical Disrupted) and Carsten Stiller (of Alarmen). For four years they have worked to do just that, both as a 'conventional' record label as well as, more recently, a netlabel.

Reviews

V/A - Konkrete
In summation: an intellectual collection of some inspirational mood music, well worth listening to, that suggests a promising future for Spectraliquid.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_k.htm

Memmaker - How To Enlist In A Robot Uprising
On first listen this album packs more punch than Mike Tyson in top shape and scores in awesomeness in a level comparable to the Transformers. Despite the danger of the novelty eventually wearing off, it is an excellent debut release and the swift kick in the pants that the electro-industrial scenes are in dire need of.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_memmaker_hteiaru.htm

Toy Bizarre - kdi dctb 039
After all is said and done though, this really is a pretty unique release. Toy Bizarre definitely does have his own sound in this field and I'd be more than willing to check out further releases of his.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_toybizarre_kd0.htm

Instant Movie Combinations - Shipyard
Admitted, the sounds could have been a bit more interesting at times - a bit more varied modulations, additional layers, etc - but, for the well trained ear there is sonic pleasure at the shipyard.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_instantmoviecombinations_s.htm

igOr OGOGO - Solo View
This is art for art's sake in a lot of respects and there was a danger that I would start skipping tracks in desperate fashion, trying to eek out some life amongst the depths of this disc.  I felt emotionless and numb, and it was all a little too much for me.

Windimoto - The Travels Of Windimoto
While "The Travels Of Windomoto" isn't particularly well-achieved, there may be potential for vast improvement in their brand of house music by addressing the major flaws that can be spotted a mile away and perhaps adding some variety by incorporating elements from other music genres.

Reviews

Cloama + Blutleuchte - From Wasteland Mausoleums
Behind many of Howard Phillips Lovecraft's works lies a hidden terror, an incomprehensible force that if beheld in material form often led to madness. The foreboding sound of "From Wasteland Mausoleums" is reminiscent of such strange stories.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_cloamablutleuchte_fwm.htm

Pixelh8 - The Boy With The Digital Heart
You can't get more retro than this if you're into this kind of stuff. And like popping up your favourite cartridge in your favourite 80's system, this will - strangely - bring you back all those memories that only those wonderful devices can usually replenish.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_pixelh8_tbwtdh.htm

Suicide Booth - Aura EP
Despite the obvious influences and similarities to many 80's genres, "Aura" has a sort of intemporality to it which would probably make it a great record had it been released anywhere between the 1960's and the 2030's, and maybe even beyond.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_suicidebooth_aep.htm

Universal Poplab - Uprising
'Gay Synthpop', in the third, non-homophobic sense of the word, is an acquired taste, especially amongst those who enjoy harder electronic music. Universal Poplab, as their name suggests, have broad appeal and should be heading straight for the pop charts. If only synthpop was in fashion again!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_universalpoplab_u.htm

Tor Lundvall - The Seasons Unfold (sampler)
The music is soft and delicate, pleasant while occasionally suggesting a little darkness, especially on the closing track "November's Fields".  Gentle melodies flow calmly into the listener's conscience and spacious instrumental arrangements provide soothing release.

Null Device - Excursions
You know it when you find something that can't be easily categorized and yet it does fit the title with such perfection that only the album itself can rival with... This is one of those cases and it does make it as an interesting experience indeed.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_nulldevice_e.htm

Totakeke - eLekatota: The Other Side Of The Tracks
"eLekatota" is one of those albums that demands (and deserves) the listener's undivided time and attention to be fully appreciated. An excellent listening choice for those occasions in which one finds time to not do anything else but sit down, relax, appreciate a very good record and forget about life's worries.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_totakeke_etosott.htm

ESA - How Pure Would Your Utopia Be?
The sophomore release of British musician Jamie Blacker's solo project, ESA (Electronic Substance Abuse), shows that the positive critical reactions his debut offering were quite deserved and that the artist was still capable of improving the quality and creativity of his work.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_esa_hpwyub.htm

Algol - Deep Thoughts About Universe9
The tracklisting on Algol's "Deep thoughts about universe" reads like something approaching the catalogue of a surrealist art collection (exemplified by "Aware of universe's inevitable collapse" and "The conversation of space to time") but the lofty pretensions to high art end there, thankfully.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_algol_dtau.htm

Parade Ground - Rosary
"Rosary" won't certainly bring Parade Ground into the forefront of industrial music, but it's worth a few spins especially if you miss the sounds and experiments of the 80's. If you don't, it is possible that you will get tired after some minutes into the record, since this is certainly not easy-listening stuff.

Reviews

V/A - Emerging Organisms
A veritable pile of unadulterated dark electronic psychoses and shining atmospheres, the addictive mood kindled by volume one of the Hidden Forms compilation series establishes a precedent that will prove difficult for later installments to match.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_eo.htm

Abominations Of Yondo - Abominations Of Yondo
erhaps this sort of dark ambiental soundtrack is not adequate for everyone but admirers of Clark Ashton Smith, H. P. Lovecraft and similar writers will find this an essential release for their collections. Others should also check it out, if not because this album is also available as a free downloadable release.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_abominationsofyondo_aoy.htm

Igorrr - Moisissure
Summarily, it is unlikely that "Moisissure" will garner any commercial accolades for Igorrr; a pity, as anything this original and fresh (there really is nothing even vaguely similar available anywhere) as this selection of eleven pieces of brilliant lunacy deserves great praise.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_igorrr_m.htm

Thermidor - 1929
Although no one track appears to have a specific theme as such, each one has a story of its own that is told in colourful detail by J.'s twisting, turning and mutating style. "1929" is a multi-faceted album of hidden depth that leaves plenty to discover on future listens.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_thermidor_1929.htm

V/A - Muzyka Voln
The Russian label Zhelezobeton decided it was time to create a new sub-label. It is unknown what the speciality for this label will be, but its first release is an ambient/drone sampler presenting 12 Russian composers doing their thing. And what mighty fine things they are...
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_mv.htm

Robert Piotrowicz - Lasting Clinamen
For an average listener there might be a bit too much repetition. For sound freaks on the other hand, there is quite a lot to discover. Definitly worth it for the "freaks", though if you're looking for some easy listening ambience... Don't even think about getting this one.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_robertpiotrowicz_lc.htm

Somatic Responses - Digital Darkness
While known for their selected brand of stabbing, dark IDM and furious drum 'n bass collages, Somatic Responses take their formula one step backwards this time by adding a variety of squelching 303-style acid tweaking and marginal vocal samples to their recipe.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_somaticresponses_dd.htm

Reviews

Junkie XL - Booming Back At You
Holistically, a bizarre blend of psychedelia, 80's kitsch and sexual overtones, "Booming Back at You" is raw, raunchy, light-hearted and thoroughly enjoyable stuff. Shallower than a roadside puddle, slicker than greasepaint and sleazier than sin itself, this is what Techno Body Music should embody, and what Junkie XL has managed to do - in spades.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_junkiexl_bbay.htm

Quench - Fanion
"Fanion", the latest result of this musical approach by the Funcken brothers, is a collection of four complex, but definitely still quite laidback, compositions with each track being an example of skilful and precise composition with great attention to detail. Aptly titled "Fanion" feels like a marker in a sonic exploration in progress which, if pursued, may well be quite interesting.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_quench_f.htm

Autoclav1.1 - Broken Beats For Broken Hearts
The track listing on the album has each track described as "broken" rather than "remixed", a nice touch, but it's lucky of course that most of the artists here managed to repair the damage they inflicted on Autoclav1.1 and return with something worthwhile in its own right.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_autoclav11_bbfbh.htm

Life's Decay - Szilentia
Life's Decay have certainly got the potential to become a major force within this still small scene of military pop, but as the singer is the focal point of any pop group this one really is holding them back.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_lifesdecay_s.htm

Banister - This Is Not About Noise
This collection of recordings suffers from poor sound choices and questionable mixing. The percussion is stale. While it's not the worst thing I ever heard, it certainly falls into the realm of the bland and quickly forgettable.

Reviews

Kilowatts and Vanek - Focus & Flow
While the blatant accessibility of Vanek's vocals may turn off some listeners who necessitate more grit to their music, those who find solace in warm electronica along the lines of Postal Service, Styrofoam, or even Apparat will certainly feel right at home with "Focus & Flow."
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_kilowattsandvanek_ff.htm

Liar's Rosebush - Circle The Squares
Trying to label Rosen's music is pointless.  It certainly falls at the hard electronic or breakcore end of things but beyond that it also shows some originality. His method of combining styles is impressive, never letting any given track become in any way repetitive.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_liarsrosebush_cts.htm

Spherical Disrupted - Barriere
The fact that "Barriere" is essentially an EP consisting of one long new track, together with ten remixes, would otherwise suggest the low productivity to be excessive, but such is the quality of artists lined up here that this minor complaint is soon forgotten.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_sphericaldisrupted_b.htm

Indu Mezu - Opus
Indu Mezu's "Opus" offers a different take on electronic music, dispensing with computers and soft synths to get back to using old experimental techniques and simpler, but still skilful, sound creation and manipulation.
