Luís 'van' Seixas and Fernando Cerqueira - Thisco
In five years existence, Thisco have had a regular output of quality releases in a wide variety of electronic music styles, featuring both Portuguese and non-Portuguese artists, some of them reference names in their particular styles.

Reviews

Rubikon - Wonderland
Although described by the band themselves as an Electropop album, "Wonderland" just goes to show that you should never judge a book by its cover. Though it's still fairly early to say whether or not this is going to be the Electropop release of the year, it is definitely a strong contender.

Mewark - Little One
If a good dictionary were to list an up-to-date definition of IDM, it would probably end with the cross-reference, "see Mewark". Also, Mewark's music remains a paradoxically light-hearted take on the traditional gloom associated with the sparse, desolate soundscapes of IDM and ambient music.

V/A - Deep Sea Shipping
"Deep Sea Shipping" is an excellent piece of work that deserves attention not only for being a collection of great music but also for being such a thematically and aurally coherent compilation which makes for an extremely engaging listening experience.

REVIEWS

Naarmann & Neiteller - Naarland
While still far from something that would make it massively into clubs, "Naarland" is in its whole a definitely praiseworthy release. It is easily worth a listen and leaves good future expectations from both the creative duo and the label.

Mockingwyrd - Cracks in the Void
Two well done musical pieces composed with heavily processed bass guitar and which would easily hit home with fans of darker ambient music and the so-called "drone doom" scene.

24hourflu - 24hourflu
A self-described "experimental, progressive rock unit," 24hourflu falls in stride with what is best described as post-rock, a genre comprised of a global collection of bands that all produce the climactic highs and quiet lows typical of their collective apocalyptic tagline.

Reviews

Syphilis Sauna - From Initial Infection to Eventual Deterioration
Glitchy yet melodic, quirky yet comprehensible, the resulting pieces in this release collectively seem too nice to be noise, too energetic to be ambient and too personal to be electronica, while touching on all of these genres.

Reviews

Keef Baker - Redeye[/b]
An absolute necessity to any electronica enthusiast's collection. If you were starting to get a bit bored with hearing the same thing rehashed over and over again, this will give you the kick you need to see that there is still life in electronica yet.

Susan Matthews - Lost Sorrows EP[/b]

Daniel Menche - Animality[/b]
With each concussion, shivering tone, clicking palpitation or superbly resonant thwack of the animal-skin drums, "Animality" extends its penetrating cascade of hypnotic percussion into the very heart of savage spirituality. This is indeed what blood sounds like.

Haeretici 7o74 - Heard Flayings[/b]
One would probably best describe this disc as dark, 'uneasy listening' ambience that is interconnected with pummeling noise but, for the most part, it is done in a more creative and original way than most "noise artists" who simply turn up the mixer levels and go full on with distortion.

Q*Ball - This Is Serious Business[/b]
Though it may sound to restrained, almost as if the artist is avoided to take chances, Q*Ball's third full-length release is nevertheless a good release that competently crosses between electropop and rock, with mainstream appeal and keeping a sort of distinctive quirkiness.

Kotra & Zavoloka - Wag The Swing
"Wag the Swing" represents approximately one hour of audio insanity. If a Ukrainian Folk festival were to be hijacked by Cevin Key, and all the participants force-fed amphetamines, the resulting sonic chaos would be a fair approximation of the chaotic noises generated by Kotra and Zavoloka on this release.

Chaos As Shelter - Dawn Syndrome
"Dawn Syndrome" was composed in 2001 and released only in 2005 but a good album should be timeless and, having enjoyed a couple of decent compilation tracks by this dark ambient act some years ago, I was eager to discover how their more recent efforts had progressed.

Itto - Sound on an Empty Road
"Sound on an Empty Road" is a constant guessing game of paranoia and movement, where half-seen forms lurk and breathe just beyond the limits of perception - and call into question their very existence.

Moljebka Pvlse - Sadalsuud
The single-track album can often be a daunting listening experience. Dark ambient is one of the few musical genres which is suitable for such excessive lengths, and here Moljebka Pvlse has certainly made a fair (and successful) attempt at carrying off the one track epic.

Moriarty - Equation Of Madness
Moriarty's "Equation of Madness" is, quite simply, dark. This is not the type of album you'll put on when your parents come to visit; it is, however, most definitely the album of choice if you happen to be planning an evening of reading Dante's "Divine Comedy" aloud.

Cervello Elettronico - Negate The Instigator
Cervello Elettronico's official debut (after stacks of self-released EPs and demos), "Negate the Instigator", is... nice. It seems, even after repeated listenings, that the record, uncomfortable with its identity, invents a new genre for itself: "easy-listening industrial".

Interviews

Schizoid - D-Trash Records
From their beginings as provider of underground electronic music over the internet, D-Trash has grown and consolidated to become a reference name in the field of electronic music, with a roster of artists that spans genres as diverse as digital hardcore, breakcore, punk, metal and noise (among others) without losing the touch with its underground roots.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/interviews/m_hiverecords.htm

Reviews

Cast - Are Teek L
The first release to come from Cast, alias Denis Kaznacheev, the album is nothing short of an impressive display of creativity and musicianship, with a maturity that is simply unexpected from first releases, but certainly most welcome.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_cast_atl.htm

Mark Nicholas - Duchess 33
With an album as diverse as this it really would be a chore to get bored of it so easily and, on the whole, this album puts the fun back into music. If you like your music a bit zany, twisted and downright wrong at times then look no further, "Duchess 33" will deliver.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_marknicholas_d33.htm

Svarte Greiner - Knive
A journey through a withered landscape. The torn off branches lay scattered over the by birds deserted swamp, resulting in an almost guilty feeling concerning one's presence. The beauty of this is described by the harmony in the album, while the rough landscape is covered by the experiment.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_svartegreiner_k.htm

V/A - Ghos Busters III
These bands share with the 'proper' electroacoustic movement a sense of the primacy of fluid sound design, a marriage of the concrète and the abstract, and a pursuit of technical innovation (software included for the geeks).
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_gb3.htm

Greg Haines - Slumber Tides
An album which is good. Very good. It's all organic and sincere feelings, captured by a xylophone, a cello and Kristin, whose voice can also be found in Svarte Greiner's "Knife" album. It's a small world... But damn, it's beautiful.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_greghaines_st.htm

Radium 88 - Only Science Can Tell Us The Truth
A high quality album from the start, with melancholic strings and piano melodies provoking genuine emotional responses the main attraction for me, while the downside is the uncomfortable inclusion of certain incongruous instruments, sounds or styles.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_radium88_osctutt.htm

Bisclaveret - Psyche noMine
One can hear that this is a product made with a lot of conviction. Admirers of Swedish dark ambient and black/death/drone metal (the album has a lot of influences from metal too) should consider purchasing this.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_bisclaveret_pn.htm

Devhour / City Of Industry / Tatsumaki - Seek And Thistroy!
Featuring the combined efforts of Tatsumaki, Devhour and City Of Industry, "Seek and Thistroy" ventures somewhat away from the usual compilation format that Thisco has so far accustomed us to (and to very good effect), opting instead for a split album focusing on the three Portugal-based acts.

img src="http://www.connexionbizarre.net/interviews/m_lagunamuch_small.jpg[/img]
The Lagunamuch community was founded in the summer of 2004 in Moscow and, since then, has been releasing various experimental music styles ranging from ambient to experimental electronic. In addition, the Lagunamuch community label spawned Peace Technologies, a spin-off sub-label dedicated to idm/techno.

Reviews

Cultural Amnesia - Enormous Savages
A quite diverse collection of tracks that, at around 25 years old, still sound fresh and interesting all these years later. Stylistically original, most definitely talented and backed by Balance himself, Cultural Amnesia most certainly had a future beyond the few years they were together.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_culturalamnesia_es.htm

Lingouf - Ecritomate
The ideal soundtrack to Roman Dirge's "Lenore, the cute dead girl", with Lenore pumped full of amphetamines, going on an innocent and happy murder frenzy accompanied by cute killer fluffy bunnies. Yes, "Ecritomate" is that cartoony, intense, happy and, more important, insane.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_lingouf_e.htm

Unit 21 - November
Another noteworthy project affiliated with the Russian Lagunamuch community, Unit 21 captures the essence of the seasonal shift, as autumnal decay gradually gives way to stark winter landscapes.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_unit21_n.htm

Feu Follet & Miina Virtanen - The Icicle Lectures Vol.1
Subtly shifting drones and absorbing ambient soundscapes are Fischer's speciality it seems and it will be interesting to hear more from him in the future. Virtanen is also a talented musician whose music plays a key role in the mood, emotion and scene setting created by the music presented on this album.

Interviews

Martin Lemoine - .Angle.Rec.
Label for artists who work in the tangential sectors of electronic music, producing cerebral atmospheric and experimental textures, venturing into the hallucinated areas of rhythmic and elastic technoid music or who, simply, devote themselves to the creation of a pure and raw sound transcoded into a hammered or deconstructed idiom...
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/interviews/m_anglerec.htm

Reviews

Caustic - Booze Up And Riot
The message of noisy anarchic rebellion in the face of all authority is delivered with sincerity and emotion, despite Matt Fanale's constant assertions that he doesn't know what he's doing. If you like your music hard, angry and in-your-face, you could do a whole lot worse than Caustic.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_caustic_buar.htm

Ultraviolet - Dos
Ultraviolet is in many ways a pretty straightforward Synthpop act, with songs fuelled by harmonies, melodic synth leads, and strong passionate male vocals. Whilst his sound may not be totally original, he does have a very modern touch to his music.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_ultraviolet_d.htm

Rafael Anton Irisarri - Daydreaming
There is a thin line between a melancholic picture in your mind and a desolate landscape which you just photographed with your digital camera. "Daydreaming" by Rafael Anton Irisarri is an album which has a little bit of both.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_rafaelantonirisarri_d.htm

In Ether - Insult to the Unconditioned
Moody electronics with some eminent influences clearly apparent (rants from the Genesis P-Orridge school of ominous ambiguity, manga-style slice of oriental futurism, Jhon Balance, Skinny Puppy, Aleister Crowley...).
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_inether_ittu.htm

V/A - A Compilation Vol.2
The second compilation from the German record label group Black Rain will be essentially of interest for the the 'uninitiated' or curious - those seeking to learn more about the disparate genres in the modern goth scene.

Interviews

http://www.connexionbizarre.net/interviews/m_wrongmusic.htm

Ben Hudson and Henry Collins - Wrong Music
Wrong Music is a label that most certainly lives up to its name... They release some terribly wrong music, ranging from insane mashups featuring Rolf Harris and Ren and Stimpy, unbelievably noisy tracks using gameboy sounds courtesy of DJ Scotch Egg and stuff that borders on the indescribable!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/interviews/m_wrongmusic.htm

Reviews

U-inductio - Sounds for contemporary performance, exhibition and dance
Listening to the music which holds the middle between the glitch in the vein of Ryuchi Ikeda and a fully stripped and minimalistic version of the Einsturzende Neubauten (without lyrics) it grows on you with every listen.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_uinductio_sfcpean.htm

Maggot Breeder - Myiasis
Having performed in various doom, sludge and hardcore bands over the years, Ordonez uses the guitar as the main noise generator in his dark ambient compositions, giving a somewhat more natural and organic edge over synthetic equivalents.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_maggotbreeder_m.htm

Oblivion Ensemble - Seraphim Hallucino
There are many moments which are profoundly moving or deeply unsettling, and there does appear to be much talent and innovation on display, but there is rarely time allowed to enjoy anything for any decent length of time.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_oblivionensemble_sh.htm

Murder By Static - Luxicon Phase
In the future perhaps Murder By Static will be best served by doing a much more pure release - sticking with one genre and really working with it. He has talent but he needs to refocus his energies and focus on what he is best at, rather than try and play around with everything.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_murderbystatic_lp.htm

INTERVIEWS

Dancon1 - disco_r.dance
Disco_r.dance are relatively new kids when it comes to this record label business with only one title under their belts, but both Dancon1 and Pete Stormcrow have been busy on the promotion side of electronic music for many years now, and are residents at London's legendary bar and art space, The Foundry.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/interviews/m_discordance.htm

REVIEWS

Evestus - Wastelands
Masterfully composed and performed, this is a truly evocative album that defies simple categorization and is sure to appeal to a wide audience, despite (or perhaps because) of the large amount of musical elements and influences which are skilfully and successfully merged in Evestus' compositions.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_evestus_w.htm

Ghosts On Water - Ghosts On Water
Essential for fans of music in the drone ambient category. Many people who work in similar fields fall into the trap of being too repetitious and don't have near enough going on, something that "Ghosts on Water" avoids with a unique and very refreshing approach.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_ghostsonwater_gow.htm

Cruise [CTRL] - Garmonbozia!
A strong release that is bound to garner a lot attention in clubs in both the electro and industrial scenes, if they get played. Musically, they know what they're doing, and their upcoming full length album sounds interesting, to say the least.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_cruisectrl_g.htm

Igor Krutogolov - White
Krutogolov seems to have a vision of the imagery and mood he wants to create from the very start and a mastery at achieving his aims. At times melodic, at others reflective, but always warm and enveloping, "White" invites you to sit down, listen and experience.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_igorkrutogolov_w.htm

Contra - Enter The Winter
A strong album for fans of punishing electronics (not exactly in the extreme noise/power electronics way), or simply for those looking for something 'hard' but with fairly consistent beat to go along.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_contra_etw.htm

V/A - The Virus Has Been Spread - a tribute to Atari Teenage Riot
Definitely not for the faint-hearted, this is a compilation that smashes across musical boundaries (probably vandalising them as it passes as well) to showcase the massive influence Atari Teenage Riot had on the electronic scene.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_tvhbs.htm

Virtual Server - Setup
Probably not the strongest DJ Ram work, "Setup" could've been much better, considering the amount of talent on offer and being produced by one of the strongest artists on today's Synthpop scene.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_virtualserver_s.htm

Interviews

Greg Werckman - Ipecac Recordings
Created by Mike Patton (known for his work in Faith No More and Fantômas) and Greg Werckman (formerly of Alternative Tentacles), this is quite possibly one of the most interesting labels around at the momnet, releasing pretty much anything they like, regardless of genres or music trends.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/interviews/m_ipecacrecordings.htm

Reviews

Stendeck - Faces
A sublime journey through mind-bending, supple synths and ample chords, punctuated by crunchy, ductile beats. Distinguished by meticulous layering, rich veins of percussive noise, fat bass saturations and annihilating crescendos, the album is indicative of an imagination both otherworldly and tremendous.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_stendeck_f.htm

Lingouf - Internazionale Fratricide
A record which displays enough uniqueness to easily blast away all those records that merely blast speakers, in a display of powerful, aggressive and inspired musicianship.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_lingouf_if.htm

Gregorio Bardini - Sentilelle Del Mattino
Jarring but gorgeous, electronic but acoustic, Italian musician Gregorio Bardini offers up an unusual blend of folkish samples and instrumentation set to cascading IDM percussion and makes for a mysterious journey.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_gregoriobardini_sdm.htm

Seventeen Migs Of Spring - Live in Hateiva
Highly competent and pleasingly hypnotic, and not a million miles from Nurse With Wound's recent live debut; they've certainly made the best of what's clearly a low-budget production and I hope they can bring the show outside of Israel some day.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_seventeenmigsofspring_lih.htm

Akron - Origins of the 7 Deadly Sins
Steeped in orchestral bombast and danceable drama, this current release from the Greek duo Akron makes for challenging but enjoyable listening. Eloquent as it is unrestrained, Akron combine classical virtuosity with digital expression in equally structured but emotive parts.

Interviews

Nicolas Chevreux - Ad Noiseam
Founded as a spin-off of the successful webzine Recycle Your Ears, Ad Noiseam is an essential reference in the field of underground experimental electronics. With a varied roster along its 6-year existence Ad Noiseam is a dynamic label that does not show any signs of being stuck into a single music genre.

Reviews

Hansel - Lorentzian Lineshaper
The combination of Hansel's skeptical mindset and hybrid sound makes "Lorentzian Lineshaper" a formidable release, and its crowning touch must be the fantastic album artwork.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_hansel_ll.htm

It-Clings vs. Pneumatic Detach - The All Too Logical Descent Into Madness
Aptly titled, one can't help but wonder if one isn't listening to the raging ramblings of a psychotic madman or, at the very least, a seriously maladjusted misanthrope. Someone who, if there was such a thing as a 'Thought Police', would be a prime candidate for execution for what goes on in his mind.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_itclingspneumaticdetach_tatldim.htm

Flint Glass + Telepherique - Information Gigabyte
Be aware that these tracks are not songs, these are sounds of electronic world amplified and overlaid until they create a tapestry of ones and zeros. When they find the rhythm to create structure, it is as much through randomness - the ghost in the machine - as it is through design.

Neuropa - The Blitz
Slightly edgier than previous releases, the new Neuropa offering is an enjoyable 80's retro album which, although lacking something in terms of progression, is sure to slowly grow on the listener.

V/A - CrO2: A Tribute to Analog
The experimental and musique concréte scenes are exploding with a million better artists than the majority of artists showcased in this compilation.

Interviews

Sometimes good music can easily slip by unnoticed even if one is on the lookout for it. That is especially true of very small labels like Killing Music, a young upstart synthpop label from Sweden. Picking up the torch for Scandinavian synthpop, Killing Music is a label to be on the lookout for in the future.

Reviews

Artur Nowak - Granulizer
A somewhat old release from the Polish EMD label, Artur Nowak's 2004 "Guitar Granulizer" is a 50 track concept release, on Nowak's experimentation on the sounds achievable through the application of a multitude of different effects on guitar sample tracks.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_arturnowak_g.htm

Niko Skorpio - Escape From Heaven
Although the mood is consistently dark and heavy throughout, "Escape from Heaven" is wonderfully constructed and, while it is occasionally quite harrowing and disturbing, the music is accomplished and carefully considered.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_nikoskorpio_efh.htm

Element - Genocide
When viewed as a demo, the naive qualities of the recording fall away, leaving the listener suitably impressed with some pretty clever compositions.

Godlike - It Will Be Godlike/Underground
At a time when electronic music is often accused of prioritising sound or genre accessibility over song writing - by way of automata, this single offers deliverance.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_godlike_iwbgu.htm

Xavier Charles & Robert Piotrowicz - ///
Although based largely around walls of noise, "///" is not overly harsh but is also quite challenging listening. There is some loose structure to the whole thing but don't expect any 'tracks' or 'songs', "///" is pure sound experimentation spread over a single 22-minute live performance.

Supreme Court - Hypocrites + Saints
The final impression is one of insincerity. Musically, Supreme Court can be effortlessly slotted into the mix alongside acts like Aslan Faction or Grendel, but lack the emotional impact that either of the aforementioned offer the listener.

Reviews

Signalform + Tachikoma - Understanding Media
Not quite beat-driven, but certainly not devoid of abstract rhythm, well-produced and squeaky-clean in its sound dynamics, "Understanding Media" won't necessarily provide any global communications epiphanies or surpass any typical IDM frontiers, but it will undoubtedly de-stress the hectic postmodern life.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_signalformtachikoma_um.htm

Zonk't - -trope
Laurent Perrier is a name you definitly will hear more about in the future. A multi-talented musican / artist with much more capabilities then just one single style. And not many artists are capable of
excelling in multiple genres.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_zonkt_t.htm

Glaukom Synod - Uczulony
This is still a fair deal better than so many of the other electro/noise/grindcore mashup bands out there, and all in all, despite the inherent problems mentioned, this is still a good release. Some of the songs really just makes you want to get up and rhythmically punch someone in the face!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_glaukomsynod_u.htm

Ova Looven - Gravity Has Expired
Combining the post punk and shoegaze of New York with a dreamier, electro-ambient toolkit, Ova Looven's new 12" single yields easy listening and sweetness but is by no means without depth.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_ovalooven_ghe.htm

V/A - Beyond Ignorance And Borders
C-drik clearly understands the exotic allure of foreign sounds set in a contemporary experimental context but didn't quite get the balance right with this compilation, as many of the tracks sound a little generic and don't really connect the listener with their origins.
