Ovnis / Connexion Bizarre - updates thread 2009
« le: octobre 15, 2009, 02:05:20 am »
Connexion Bizarre was updated on October 12 th with new content (webcasts, links and a competition of sorts).

A quick overview of this week's update:
Webcast: "Dark Night of the Soul" with music selection by Machinochrist and "untitled migraine relief" with music selection by M.

As mentioned before, we have also set up a http://www.connexionbizarre.net/donations.htm - donations page. While Connexion Bizarre may be hosted for free and run by volunteers but it does have its costs (postal expenses come to mind). If you appreciate the work we are doing or find it useful in some manner, please consider a http://www.connexionbizarre.net/donations.htm - donation or perhaps a quick trip to our http://www.connexionbizarre.net/store.htm"]store.

Best regards,
Miguel

Machinochrist giveaway
Something slightly different this time with http://machinochrist.co.uk/ presenting his webcast listeners with a challenge this time.
Detailed instructions are given in the webcast itself but, in a nutshell, download/listen to this set and mail competition@machinochrist.co.uk  a list of all the tracks that you managed to recognize. The winner will get a one-of-a-kind CD-R edition of unreleased Machinochrist material in handmade packaging and original artwork.
Quite a treat if one knows his 2007 release "Escape From Woolwich Arsenal" which received a very positive review in Connexion Bizarre (http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_machinochrist_efwa.htm ).

Je crois que je me debrouille avec mon français mais, pour dire la verité, je ne participe pas beaucoup (à part de lire ce qui ce passe) car je suis trop souvent debordé avec travail 'in real life' et il ne me reste pas trop de temps libre. ;-/

Interviews

Ian Boddy - DiN
A veteran of the European electronic music scene since the late 70s, UK based sonic explorer Ian Boddy has produced 13 CDs on his Something Else Records label. Emerging from the post TDream generation, Boddy has carved out a distinctive position as an independent composer and performer.

Reviews

Wentworth Kersey - (O)
Loosely described as an americana EP, "(O)" is the latest release by Wentworth Kersey, a duo from Denver, Colorado in the USA, and who have a sound that is like shoegazer, post rock, americana... And utterly gorgeous it is too!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_wentworthkersey_o2.htm

Millipede - All My Best Intentions
This is the first release of Porteur de L'image's Don Hill's side project, Millipede. Don has been creating music for over 10 years and now has found a home for this magnificent project on Hymen Records. The auditory terrain of Millipede is an uneasy landscape of glitch-ridden drums, ambient pads and thick lows, ethereal melodies and symphonic cascades carrying the listener away.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_millipede_ambi.htm

Skin Contact - Antitrust
Dark electronic break-beat is what you can expect from this little gem of a release from Skin Contact titled "Antitrust". Simply complex, or complexity disguised as simplicity; those were my thoughts as I put my headphones on, turned up the volume, and begun listening. The entire album gives itself to easy listening with a few minor flaws.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_skincontact_a.htm

Tzii - Rotten Friendship
The works of Tzii form the basis for a dual CD-R/DVD-R release, coming in an intriguingly beautiful, handcrafted silkscreen packaging with a limited run of 300 copies. An easy recommendation to anyone intrigued by finecrafted aural and visual displays of dark themes, be it an audience uninitiated to the original tracks, or one seeking something new yet (un)comfortably familiar.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_tzii_rf.htm

V/A - Miwak 12
All in all this compilation offers us a very wide selection of what Hymen Records has to offer.  The broad range of the tracks makes for a varied listening experience but, with repeated listens, one may I tend to skip a few tracks in order to stay in one vibe. "Miwak 12" clearly shows that Hymen is at the top of their game and still has plenty of quality electronic music for us in store.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_m12.htm

Roughhausen - Someone's Got To Pay
Roughhausen produce a great EP but the contribution of live and remix tracks will always detour new listeners. I suggest this album as a taste for any new listener who enjoys My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Velvet Acid Christ or KMFDM. You will not be disappointed with this short bare-knuckle brawl of EBM and industrial.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_roughhausen_sgtp.htm

Brian E - Yellow Light District
Inspired by living legends of electronic music such as Giorgio Moroder and Kraftwerk as well as by the Italo Disco era, Brian E delivers us an uninterrupted stream of catchy melodies, purring bass lines, and poppy analog synthesizer sounds which were the trademark of the 70's greater masterpieces of the genre, of whom Brian E is the heir.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_briane_yld.htm

Low Technicians - Riga
This electropop outfit from Austin, Texas, claims as its focus a melodic melding of pop and rock, via the medium of electronic dance music. A suitably generic categorization, in any case, for an album consisting of repetitive synthpop standards with mediocre vocals and a splash of guitar for texture.

Reviews

Dead Voices on Air - Fast Falls the Eventide
The eleventh full-length release from Mark Spybey, an album which is an odyssey of sounds that will evoke soothing and agitated responses. Spybey has mastered the fine art of experimental music by never teetering at the brink of chaos too long and drawing in the listener with classical elements heard through new ears. A treat for the loyal fan and an impressive range of genres for the newcomers that will not soon be forgotten.

Miel Noir - Der Honigflügel
A dramatic, if not tragic, story is being told here - but you can always invent your own and the cinematic arrangement of the sound seems to invite this. Still, although this is a unique and intriguing work that's perfect for atmospheric late night listening, there's a sense that it could have gone further and transcended its sources more fully, rather than simply running through them.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_mielnoir_dh.htm

Pål Asle Pettersen - Komposisjoner 2005-2008
Although Pål Asle Pettersen's work is full of dramatic and even perverse shifts and transitions it implies a challenge to the way in which we increasingly form instant judgements on music. It can't easily be assimilated in a sitting and demands some attentive repeat listening in order to (try) and piece together what's actually happening.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_palaslepettersen_k.htm

Thunderwheel - Credo
Overall fantastic, bizarre, uneasy, absurd, and tortured, some of which may reflect the environment in which it is produced. It's hard to tell how much of this is deliberately humorous or excessively kitsch or whether Gusis simply couldn't restrain himself from over-indulging. In any case, although this is interesting it doesn't match the finer moments of Agnivolok or Chaos As Shelter.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_thunderwheel_c.htm

Overdose Kunst - Was Ist Overdose Kunst?
In its own terms and for whatever target audience (if any) that it may have, this brief collection is probably a brilliant success, but its appeal will definitely be limited - this one is only for true connoisseurs of weirdness.

Reviews

Juan Matos Capote - Jabal
Juan Matos Capote is a sound and visual artist who currently resides in Barcelona and whose  impressive resume includes studying circuit-bending under Reed Ghazala.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_juanmatoscapote_j.htm

End - The Dangerous Class
Straight to the point with this one: this is the soundtrack to the reviewer's inevitable mental breakdown. Tthere is some weird music out there, but this is certainly some of the strangest in some time and with that it brings mental imagery that nothing else could possibly inspire... Rockabilly, Surf Music, Breakcore, Hunter S. Thompson, 1920's Flapper Girls and much, much more besides.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_end_tdc.htm

Skullduggery - You Are Here. [Nowhere]
To do this album justice it's an album you don't need to be reading about, other than to be recommended it. It's not going to be for everyone, but it's really worth giving a try - you will either find it an engaging curiousity or a massively rewarding and challenging listen. The reviewier is in the latter camp, and more than a few listens in is still finding bits he missed.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_skullduggery_yahn.htm

Zonk't - Beat Wins You And Me
Zonk't is only one of the many sides of a multifaceted artist who truly deserves to be discovered, for those who don't know him yet... And Zonk't may be the ideal first step to penetrate into his universe, because it remains pretty accessible for a listener who's not used to this kind of music yet, even if it often tends to fit into the experimental genre.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_zonkt_bwyam.htm

Empire State Human - Audio Gothic
If a heavy new wave influence on modern electro with a more thoughtful approach to lyrics than is expected by the mainstream, coupled with a willingness to experiment with alternative instrumentation sounds like your idea of synthpop heaven, then Empire State Human is for you. And, if you are of a darker bent, paying attention to Empire State Human's lyrics may offer you some solace as well.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_empirestatehuman_ag.htm

V/A - The Clock Machine Turns You On: Volume 2
This varied collection offers up some great music from Smartyr, Killing Joke, Transit Kings, The Sun Paulo and Analogue Mindfield. It seems to have something for every listener, which is a good thing and a bad thing at the same time as this may draw in a listener to enjoy some new music or urge them to quickly hit eject.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_tcmtyo.htm

Mad Therapist - Alien Element
We are greeted by melodic, clean electronica that is infused with calming overtones. It is an ambitious, intricate album that places the emphasis firmly on composition rather than just assailing the listener with a barrage of beats. The result? Pleasantly atmospheric, cleverly constructed background music that fades in and out of your consciousness without leaving a mark.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_madtherapist_ae.htm

Parallel Worlds - Shade
A knowledgeable hand when it comes to analogue modular synthesizers, Sirros has developed a distinctive sound via his Parallel Worlds project, at once anachronistic and immutable. The album is full of pillowy and fluid sounds; hard edges are notably absent in this somnolent journey that relies upon atmospheric IDM and ambient.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_parallelworlds_s.htm

Abraxas Projekt - Baraka - Visions
The upshot of former songwriter Jerome Paressant's twofold interest in electronic music and contemporary jazz, Abraxas Projekt presents an uncomplicated fusion of both elements with its latest release, "Baraka - Visions". Like its namesake, the 1992 film by Ron Fricke, the album is a study in juxtapositions and motion.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_abraxasprojekt_bv.htm

15 Degrees Below Zero - Resting On A
While not terribly familiar with 15 Degrees Below Zero and liking some of their previously released material, the same cannot be said of "Resting On A", unfortunately. To be honest, one is sort of at a loss as to why anyone would release this and it can be summed up quite quickly in one word: pointless.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_15dbz_roa.htm

Dessau - The Truth Hurts (1985-2000)
The title is really quite appropriate, in some respects - one fails to understand exactly why this retrospective is necessary, and indeed, who is really going to be that interested other than treating this as a relic from the past. A long-forgotten band who were too similar to some of their much more successful and more creative contemporaries to warrant too much attention, and their best known work is a cover.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_dessau_th.htm

the M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab - Modern Expressing Machines of Revolutionary Youth
It was initially difficult to know what to make of this, but when you dig into who is behind the band, you begin to expect much more. Marc Urselli is a three-time Grammy Award winner, and the other members have been involved in such extreme metal luminaries as Aborym. So really, they can surely do so much better than this.

Interviews

Stefan Herwig - Dependent
Although Dependent operates largely in the 'Electro-Industrial' genre, we have no desire to be pigeonholed as such, unlike most of the bands in the 'scene'. With our unique label concept we hope to escape the ghettoization associated with dance or metal and to establish this style of music firmly in the mainstream.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/interviews/m_dependent.htm

Reviews

Alistair Crosbie - Music For Shipwrecks
It's nice to hear someone again just hitting it ambient music from a different angle. This release would most likely have a lot in common with a lot of the Nautilus releases thematically, and I am pretty much sure a lot of fans of The [Law-Rah] Collective wouldn't feel caught short of change if they dipped into their pockets for this one either.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_alistaircrosbie_mfs.htm

Roto Visage / Worms of the Earth - Celestial Malaise
This experimental collaboration between two exceptional artists, Roto Visage and Worms of the Earth, is a journey in sound - it blends and experiments with the genres of glitch, drone, ambient and noise to produce an epic experience for the willing ear and devoted fan.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_cm.htm

Poordream - Immaterial Monarch
This album is a taste of what Poordream is capable of and, all in all, a decent collection of remixes. "Immaterial Monarch" is a foreshadowing of treats to come and I look forward to hearing the next release from this talented artist.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_poordream_im.htm

Solar Skeletons - Necroethyl
"Early Cabaret Voltaire gone blues!" If you like really old industrial music and you like blues, or if you just want to hear something unusual the likes of which you've never heard before, give Solar Skeletons a try.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_solarskeletons_n.htm

Hyperbubble - Better Set Your Phasers to Stun
"Better Set Your Phasers to Sun" sounds like the intro music for a sci-fi themed kids' cartoon where nothing bad ever happens. If you like light-hearted synthpop and are of a generally light-hearted disposition, then don't listen to a grumpy old bastard's opinion and go have a listen to some sweet, sugary sounds.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_hyperbubble_bsypts.htm

Sturqen - Sturqen
Sometimes it feels like 'Sturqen' has been jamming away, furiously twisting knobs of various angry synths and cutting out the best bits for us to enjoy. At times the tracks seem to be overtaken by waves of nasty feedback. This does intensify the listening experience, but it also makes it hard to sit through the album in one go.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_sturqen_s.htm

Mind Disruption - Fuck Yeah!
A few of the songs on this album seem to teeter on the brink of train wreck while others successfully get your foot tapping. "Fuck Yeah!" is sure to go over well with fans of the genre but the chaotic delivery and loose rhythms may leave new listeners wanting more.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_minddisruption_fy.htm

Reviews

Hecq - Steeltongued
"Steeltongued" is one hell of a release. Hecq has earned himself a place amongst the ranks of Autechre, Squarepusher and Boards of Canada, both in terms of ingenuity and songwriting skill.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_hecq_s.htm

T/M/K - Need the Needle
For a first contact with the music world of T/M/K (as Textbook of Modern Karate), this was a very unexpected and rather pleasant surprise. "Need the Needle" is one of those releases that in addition to sounding genuine are bound to have some sort of mainstream appeal as well. Easily one of the standout albums of 2009 and a project to keep an eye out for in the future.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_tmk_ntn.htm

Tapage - Fallen Clouds
No time is wasted, resulting in an absorbing listen that demands - and gets - your attention for the whole time. Not an album to buy for calming background music, as while on the surface it sounds like it would be, it is nothing of the sort. Instead it is worth investing hours in listening to this a few times to begin to reveal the delights contained within, as it certainly won't work its full magic the first time around.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_tapage_fc.htm

Fujako - Landform
Together, producers Jonathan Uliel Saldanha (a.k.a. HHY) and Nyko Esterle (a.k.a. Ripit), having purportedly sequestered themselves in a mountain studio in Portugal, engendered an unforgettable exegesis of post-hip hop norms (if such exist) and pushed the envelope for this genre with startling ferocity. "Landform" won't disappoint.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_fujako_l.htm

Hyios - Consuetudines
Once again, here rises a promising newcomer in the dark ambient/drone scene. With "Consuetudines", his debut album recently released on the US label Malignant Records, this artist from Leipzig, Germany, proves that Hyios is a name worth remembering.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_hyios_c.htm

Pandora's Black Book - Black Brothel
Unmistakably urban, "Black Brothel" is an album with a story to tell, a story which takes place between dimly-lit, smoke-filled basements, littered with the remains of cigarette ash and last week's spilled whiskey, and the dark corners of a delirious mind plagued by creeping paranoia. It is the aural equivalent of a post-modern noir thriller.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_pandorasblackbook_bb.htm

Tyske Ludder - Anonymous
While the "SCIENTific technOLOGY" EP was undeniably political in nature, "Anonymous" seems likely to tread on less toes - especially in non-German-speaking countries, where the majority of people won't have the faintest clue of what they're singing about... In all, it's a far more accessible album, and one that will undoubtedly garner further well-deserved recognition for Tyske Ludder.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_tyskeludder_a.htm

Black Lung - Full Spectrum Dominance
Perhaps what's most refreshing about Black Lung is Thrussell's lack of interest in following musical trends. He has always set his own agenda without any regard for what's zeitgeisty in the wider world of electronica, and that, along with the jaw-dropping clarity of production, gives Black Lung a certain timelessness.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_blacklung_fsd.htm

Horchata - Acytota
A sixty minute powerhouse fashioned from juxtaposed synthetic and organic sounds that don't fall prey to the clichés commonly associated with field recording. Horchata might not be the easiest flavor for your aural palate to digest, yet it's precisely what differentiates it from the artists that suffer from terminal blandness.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_horchata_a.htm

LAN Formatique - The Sadness of Distances
Definitely not the music for the impatient, but for those who see themselves on a journey after a magic stone that will save the civilisation from the creatures that hunt them day and night, desiring their souls. A word could describe the whole of this album: epic.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_lanformatique_tsod.htm

Accomplice Affair - Samotny Horyzont
If you are into ambient textures, nice and lightweight sounds that could actually lift you from the ground if you get into it for too long, then it's great stuff. My suggestion is to turn on the Discovery channel and watch the fish swim through the sea, sit back, put Accomplice Affair on the headphones and enjoy total bliss as it drives your mind into the ocean.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_accompliceaffair_sh.htm

Exocet - Grotesque Consumer
In terms of genre, Exocet operates a subtle blend between rhythmic industrial/power noise and electronica. One could say this has been done many times before by other acts in this scene, but Exocet can be said to really have a trademark sound of its own.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_exocet_gc.htm

Hyperdriver - Naked Aggression
In spite of the angry, unapproachable name of the album, there is nothing here that doesn't cause a minor fit of the giggles. More often than not, it's a case of you going, "What the hell am I listening to?", but it's all entertainment in the purest sense, distracting you momentarily from the drab mediocrity of everyday existence.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_hyperdriver_na.htm

Sleepchamber - Sorcery, Spells and Serpent Charms
Where the music is left to find its own way, to focus on the disorientating swirl of layered sounds that radiate and evolve out of each other, Zewizz's weird but intriguing music style comes into its own. Remove the loops and his music is as dark, ritualistic and unnerving as it comes.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_sleepchamber_sssc.htm

Violet - Violet Ray Gas and the Playback Singers
Utilizing the requisite field recordings, found sounds, CD/tape/vinyl manipulations, etc., Violet presents listeners with an album both disquieting in its peacefulness and jarring in its white noise banality. It is not so much mentally invasive as vaguely irritating, lacking the essential cohesion necessary in an experimental/drone record and likely far more interesting in terms of creative process than actual listenability.

Reviews

IP Neva - Symbiosis of Contradictions
Without a doubt, "Symbiosis of Contradictions" is a superb release and, if one is to judge from it, Ivan Prokurin is an artist definitely worth looking out for in the future (whether as IP Neva or by any other alias). Also, as a first release for the young Greek label Impulsive Art, this album raises the bar pretty high for upcoming releases.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_ipneva_soc.htm

Laurent Chambert - Eurêka
I really liked listening to "Eurêka", from beginning to end. It somehow captivated me, because it was so nicely mixed and has a fluid sequence that actually proves the artist's ability to manipulate ambient drones, textures, some little beats and some percussion elements layered with nice, chilled synths, as well as proves his ability to vary sounds.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_laurentchambert_e.htm

For Greater Good - For Greater Good
It is clear a lot of effort has been put into this album, and as a result it contains many accomplished and enjoyable pieces of music. But over the full album, For Greater Good appear to cover slightly too many bases, sounding like two or three related projects, and at times certain unsuccessful experiments seem to bring quality levels down slightly.

Interviews

Swaying In Thisbelief - an interview with Peter Vanek
Peter Vanek (or Peter Van Ewijk to his friends) is a man of many guises. Many may already be aware of Kilowatts & Vanek, his joint project with Jamie Watts, but there's a whole lot more to this man ranging from his own solo material to Dutch cabaret through to a Mediterranean influenced new music project

Summer Rain Recordings - an interview with David Holmes
Summer Rain Recordings, established in the summer of 2007, is a record label with a difference. Every artist signed to the label donates a minimum of 5% of their royalties for every release to NextAid, or a charity of their choice, and we match their percentage donation from the label profits from the release.

Kibuka / Nohno - an interview with Dean Dennis & Jose Snook (part 2)
Kibuka is a new project from Dean Dennis & collaborator Snook. Dean is known for his work with Clock DVA, TAGC, Sector & most recently Nohno. Kibuka provides an outlet for the more beat driven and anti-social side of the artists' personalities and stylistically it draws upon Dennis' earlier work with Clock DVA and early Sector.

Reviews

Psychic Space Invasion - Transitions
It's hard indeed to describe, or review, what would be termed 'dark ambient' in its purest form such as this. It ebbs, it ebbs some more, and doesn't really flow anywhere except at a glacial pace. It starts out inaudibly, takes nearly two minutes to be heard... But then, when you have forty-one minutes for the single track, why rush things?

Reviews

Angina P - Sensitive Files
The only downside to the IDM-influenced melodic breakeats of "Sensitive Files" is that most of the tracks use almost the exact same formula so it can start to feel a bit repetitive. Nevertheless, this is quite a good record.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_anginap_sf.htm

L'ombre - Letting Go At The Steering Wheel
Solidly composed and very mature, something that which is lacking in similarly styled recent recordings by other authors and in other labels. If you like melancholy, jazzy, melodic IDM-type music, and want to hear that occasionally mixed with power noise for some reason, then you will enjoy this record.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_lombre_lgatsw.htm

A Wake A Week - Little Black Cloud
All in all, a very impressive album and hard to find fault with it.  The only complaint might be that after the first few listens it isn't memorable enough, but then it's so enjoyable and rewarding when playing that it's clear repeated listening is the only advisable course of action!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_wakeaweek_lbc.htm

Mandelbrot - Evolution
A fitting tribute to the great great scientist and man that was Charles Darwin and to his work - a fine piece of modern ambient electronica, offering greater rewards with deeper investigation and enquiry. Why not make this album part of the soundtrack to your research?
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_mandelbrot_e.htm

V/A - United Vol.II
It is a sad thing, indeed, when such unheard levels of homogeneity within one genre are reached that a compilation CD could very well pass itself off as one artist's work. "United Vol II", the latest label sampler from the German NoiTekk label, manages somehow to pull this off, though.
