As reported today, a coalition of musicians have put in a freedom of information request to release information relating to the use of loud-music during interrogation of inmates at Guantanamo Bay. Former detainees alleged that music by artists ranging from Britney Spears to Rage Against the Machine were played at ear splitting level as part of attempts to break suspects' resolve. Now musicians want to know if music they created was used as an instrument of torture.

So in the best possible taste, we have compiled a brief playlist of the potential offending music. Please add your suggestions below.

"....Baby One More Time" - Britney Spears
"Killing In The Name" - Rage Against The Machine
"Everybody Hurts" - REM
"Don't Gimme No Lip" - Pearl Jam
"Which Side Are You On" - Billy Bragg
"Somewhat Damaged" - Nine Inch Nails
"I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" - Britney Spears
"Every Day Is The Exactly The Same" - Nine Inch Nails
"Alive" - Pearl Jam
"Hurt" - Nine Inch Nails
"Mutilation Is The Sincerest Form Of Flattery" - Marilyn Manson
"Losing My Religion" - REM
"Airline To Heaven" - Billy Bragg
"Tragedy" - Bee Gees
"Burning Flag" - Marilyn Manson
"Know Your Enemy" - Rage Against The Machine
"Barney - The Song" - Barney

A coalition of musicians including Pearl Jam and R. E. M. backed a formal demand yesterday to be told if their songs had been used to torture detainees in Guantánamo Bay and Iraq.

There have been many allegations by former prisoners that they were blasted with excruciatingly loud music for months on end — a tactic that is banned under the UN Convention Against Torture but not yet from the US Army Field Manual.

The musicians spoke out as a freedom of information request was lodged by the US campaign group No More Guantánamos, a legal move backed by the British human rights group Reprieve, which has been campaigning against “music torture” for more than a year.

According to evidence gained by human rights organisations, the list of music used included songs ranging from the death metal band Deicide’s F*** Your God to the song most frequently blasted at inmates, I Love You by Barney the Purple Dinosaur, the children’s TV character. Former detainees have said that the tactic was one of the worst and most painful used against them.

Thomas Blanton, the executive director of the National Security Archive, a freedom of information organisation helping the musicians, said: “At Guantánamo the US Government turned a jukebox into an instrument of torture. The musicians and the public have the right to know how an expression of popular culture was transformed into an interrogation technique.”

Tom Morello, guitarist with the band Rage Against the Machine — whose song Killing in the Name of was also used — said: “The fact that music I helped create was used as a tactic against humanity sickens me.”

The musicians’ campaign comes as the Obama Administration has been forced to concede that the President’s pledge to shut Guantánamo by January will fail. His bold promise to close the prison within a year of coming to office has run into myriad political and logistical problems, including fierce opposition at home to the transportation of detainees to US prisons and a reluctance by Western allies to receive many of the remaining inmates. Congress is refusing to fund the closure of the facility, which still holds about 220 prisoners.

After the September 11 attacks and the War on Terror it appears that the use of loud music first became common inside Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, scene of the infamous inmate abuse photographs.

Haj Ali, the hooded man in one of the most notorious pictures, told of being stripped and forced to listen to a looped version of David Gray’s Babylon at a volume so loud that he said he thought his head “would explode”. Metallica’s Enter Sandman was often used in Guantánamo Bay, while Queen’s We Are the Champions was a favourite among US guards at Camp Cropper in Iraq. One Iraqi talked of being taken to an unidentified location and blasted with music in a building referred to as “the disco”.

Last year the retired Lieutenant-Colonel Dan Kuehl, of the US Air Force, who teaches psychological operations to the US military, invoked the Old Testament use of loud music. “Joshua’s army used horns to strike fear into the hearts of the people of Jericho,” he told the St Petersburg Times in Florida. “His men might not have been able to break down literal walls with their trumpets but the noise eroded the enemy’s courage.”

Chouilles / DOKIDOKI in NOUVEAU FESTIVAL

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Vendredi 13 nov : POKIPOKI

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Samedi 14 nov : FREDERIC NOGRAY ET FELICIE D'ESTIENNE D'ORVES

Dimanche 15 nov : CUTTER OFF / Performance de Yann Leguay

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Lundi 16 nov : REPULSIVE SOCIETY / Presbyacusis 2 2 20 000 Hz

SISTER IODINE
is a french pionneer experimental rock band (trio) founded in the early 90's influenced by New York's no wave. They will present their fourth release "Flame Desastre" (Editions Mego, Nov 2009) initially released as a Vynil LP by Premier Sang (spring 2009). It is probably the most straight forward, concise and focused by the trio. Its intense and rough attack leaves not much time for the listener to take cover, from its aggressively joyful violent orgy of lacerated guitars, meshed with primal and exacting heavy laden drums. The production is kept deliberately raw occasionally pierced by minimal electronic effects creating a collection of burning brutality and elegant sonic devastation.
Sister Iodine played some wicked gigs in company of bands like Sonic Youth, Faust, Circle X, Keiji Heino...

CAVE
Chicago-based psychedelic/Krautrock enthusiasts Cave craft tight, funky, free-form slabs of groove-heavy, instrumental space rock that have earned the group comparisons to everyone from Can to Stereolab to Funkadelic. Formed in 2006, Cave grew out of the ashes of a handful of local Chicago bands, as well as Missouri-based Warhammer 48K.
Like driving a train full speed off a cliff only to discover that the train can fly and you´ll live forever if you stay inside.
The band released its full-length debut, Psychic Psummer, on Important Records in 2009.

MET FAMAS
Fred Bigot (Electronicat) | Nicolas Metall
When the movement of a terrestrial object around a static point is repetitive, it's called oscillation. When two people oscillate around several electric devices according to an almost repetitive mouvement, it's called rock'n'roll. At the Melt Famas dinner table, we speak about oscillations and aquatic rock'n'roll. Dessert is served when the placemats have already been cleared and in the living room the cries of guitars exhort a lack of discipline. At Melt Famas, codes are created for others. In accordance with the position of the stars, the degree of gravity and the level of caffeine in the last cup of tea, sounds cross paths underneath fingers, making us dizzy and drawing us into an immobile trance. Melt Famas, or l'invitation au voyage with a one-way ticket.

TINY NOISE and our friends are happy to present a whole weekend full of workshops and concerts, geared at sharing and enjoying excellent art practices in the field of  experimental audio art and noise music!

We do this because noise makes us feel so much better!

Since 2005 TINY NOISE has been bringing together audio artists from all over the world in specific local contexts where there is a desire to strengthen the local sound and noise art scenes. For over a year we have been researching and preparing with our friends in Cologne and Moers to design a special event that the local community can enjoy and grow from.

So please join us and bring your friends during this weekend of event. Think of it as a kind of festive 'noise science fair' and camp-out. In Cologne, visitors can relax and enjoy the show and in Moers visitors will become participants, having the opportunity to join the artists in creating new instruments, watch and take part in performances, hang out all night in the work space and join us the next morning for a brunch discussion.
