Lithops

Lithops is the solo guise of Jan St. Werner, known to most as half of popular Köln/Düsseldorf-based duo Mouse on Mars. Also a member of abstract ambient outfit Microstoria, St. Werner tends toward middle ground with his Lithops material, fusing the smooth digital weirdness of Microstoria with the smudgy, off-kilter beats and warm, imperfect textures of Mouse on Mars releases such as Instrumentals and Glam. Lithops tracks rub the outer edges of inferential electronics, and often sound as though they began their lives as happy little studio accidents, all fumbly, peripatetic rhythms emerging from a haze of muffled bass and overdriving synth textures. Although St. Werner's first Lithops tracks trace only to 1995, a flood of material quickly appeared, beginning with the two-track "Wackler/Khan" 12-inch, issued by tiny Köln-based imprint Eat Raw, and shifting into high gear with a pair of full-lengths released in 1998. St. Werner and MoM partner Andi Toma's vinyl-only Sonig label issued the first of those -- the drab, gauzy Uni Umit -- in early 1998, while the Eat Raw's LP Didot followed only months later. Although it didn't receive quite the initial distribution push of Sonig's first release -- MoM's excellent Instrumentals LP, reissued stateside by Thrill Jockey -- Uni Umit was equally as splendid, wrapping thick, organic textures around sparse rhythms, bizarre electronics, and thick, strapping, resonant bass. (The album got a stateside CD reissue in 1998, via Jim O'Rourke's Moikai label.) Didot, for its part, was slightly better-produced and rhythmically further flung than its predecessor, but both satisfy to a more or less equal degree. An additional 1998 release came in the form of the "Turbino" 7-inch, released by the otherwise unrelated Static Caravan label. Another single "Sequenced Twinset" appeared in 1999, and four years later, Lithops returned with third album Scrypt, released through Thrill Jockey.

Ark

Ark is the artist who first brought the minimal style to many French. As soon as 1997 he issues on the Brif label "Siderurgie esthétique" and "De derrière les fagots", two EPs which were not much of a great success... It's logical, Ark is a precurssor, always light years ahead of his time.

But he doesn't loose faith in his craft for that, and collaborates in 1999 with Herbert (UK) and Losoul (GER) on "Belle lurette". Everyone got skeptic listening to this new music and yet, as today Losoul or Herbert have became stars of the genre, they discover the sound of Ark!

Ark doesn't begin his career at that moment. He first plays guitar in an 80's funk band and then starts with the heavily talented Pépé Bradock the band Trankilou . Remember, "Saint Glin-Glin" and especially "Escalope de dingue" which became an interplanetary hit. After that, he unexplicably misses the jackpot with "Le magicien d'os", its funky as hell & hypnotic chant ("I like the way your booty shake, ah, ah") and its monstrous remixes.

Ark has now joined forces with french fellow artist Cabanne as Copacabannark (on Perlon); he also issued an album as Shalark (Ark with Shalom) in 2001 and even manages to find the time to pursue his solo career, with the release of an EP on the prestigious Playhouse label (GER), as well as a LP/CD compilation entitled " Alleluyark " on the french label Circus Company. Two new tracks will also be available soon on the Katapult "Various Artists" upcoming compilation, as well as a few exclusives on the next T.I.M.E.C. releases, the parisian label with a twist which gracefully helped him with the site web you're now visiting...

His live sets always include stupendous and now famous surprises. The public of the Pulp in Paris won't forget anyime soon his incredible energy-fuelled mixes from reggae to hardcore with Mr. Oizo , Feadz or Herbert. He's also been heard at the Rex, the Batofar, the Scene, the New Casino in Paris or the Panorama Bar from Berlin. When he plays, his hair get moving all around, his body is a prisoner of the beat, he becomes the most beautiful man in the world... and the most unforeseeable.

Errorsmith

Errorsmith is deeply rooted in club orientated electronic music and the club is an important reference in both his solo and collaborative work. Nevertheless his work is also very much based on research into new forms of digital sound synthesis. The club references are reduced to the core elements, while the sound develops mainly through advanced realtime manipulations. Errorsmith builds his own instruments using a modular software synthesizer. In fact building and improving the instrument while developing a musical piece is the main part of music making. Not positioning itself in a specific genre, Errorsmith's music has its own unique characteristics and is located somewhere in the no man’s land between so called serious and popular music.

Errorsmith is one half of the projects called mmm and Smith N Hack (a collaboration with Soundhack) which have released some highly acclaimed and influential clubmusic 12"'s over the last few years. He also collaborates with New York based DJ and producer I-Sound as Disco Consultant on I-Sound's label Transparent. By the way, in 2000 Errorsmith received a special mention on “Prix Ars Electronica” and in 2005 he was tour support of Autechre in Berlin.

Dj Elephant Power

Dj Elephant Power creates electronic music, composing from his instinctive relation with musical instruments (toying around with them).

Turntable battle universe passionate (check his name!), he also explores new ways of scratching with additional materials like: keyboards, waterdrums, samplerbox, dugi dugi, flutes, cha chas, laptop...
This results in a very personal musical playground.

After participating in many collaborations with Scratch Pet Land (duo band with his brother), Fan Club Orchestra (aka dj crol) and Electro Sold Collectif (impro radio show) among others, he needed something to push his energy further and made his first solo album "no si, ni so" (Sonig records) in 2004.
